• HTMLTidy is not run on everything.
• Bold and italic technically aren't deprecated, but htmltidy will harass you for using them anyway ( as well it should ).
• Note that the Wikimedia mediawiki installations generally post-process content with htmltidy ( there's an option for that in localsettings ) which would heal defective html markup.
